A Red Dao Wedding: A Unique Surprise in Sapa

In September 2022, one of our tour groups experienced just that—a moment they’ll never forget. Led by our passionate guide Krzysztof (Kris), the group spent six incredible days exploring Northern Vietnam. From wandering through Hanoi’s historic streets to kayaking in Ha Long Bay and trekking in the misty mountains of Sapa, it was already shaping up to be a memorable trip.

But Sapa had an even bigger surprise in store.

While trekking with Pham, our local guide and a proud member of the Red Dao ethnic group, we learned there would be a wedding in her village of Ta Phin. Imagine our excitement when Pham invited us to join! Weddings are a huge part of Red Dao culture, and this was a rare opportunity to be part of something so special.

Preparing for a Red Dao Celebration

To make the experience even more meaningful, Pham arranged traditional ceremonial costumes for the women in our group. After trekking all day, we returned to her guesthouse for a much-needed rest. One of the highlights was soaking in a traditional Red Dao herbal bath, a soothing mix of local herbs in a wooden tub. This centuries-old tradition is said to be healing for both body and mind, and it certainly lived up to its reputation.

But Pham didn’t stop there. She and her husband prepared a feast of local dishes to fuel us up for the big celebration. It was the perfect way to get a taste of the Red Dao lifestyle before heading off to the wedding.

The Wedding Adventure

The journey to the wedding was an adventure of its own. We hopped on motorbikes and rode through the village, surrounded by vibrant fields and rolling hills. As we arrived, we saw enormous tents set up in the village square, alive with music, laughter, and celebration.

Although we weren’t family or close friends of the couple, the community welcomed us like honored guests. The tables were loaded with delicious Red Dao dishes—sticky rice, turmeric-flavored chicken, pork stew, and more. And of course, there was corn moonshine, the wedding’s signature drink, flowing freely!

The atmosphere was electric, with karaoke and dancing filling the air. It didn’t take long for us to join in the festivities, moving between tents and mingling with locals.

Discovering Red Dao Wedding Traditions

Red Dao weddings are extraordinary events steeped in tradition. They typically last two or three days, ensuring everyone in the village can join the celebration. Before the big day, both families host smaller gatherings to celebrate with their guests.

One of the most unique customs involves the bride. Before entering her new home, she participates in a ceremony to ward off misfortune and honor her family. She sits in a chair while people walk around her playing trumpets and drums—a beautiful way to express gratitude for her upbringing.

After the wedding, traditions continue, such as the bride spending her first night in a temporary tent before officially moving in with her new family. These rituals preserve the couple’s happiness and ensure a prosperous future together.
