We will leave from crowded Saigon down south to drive past hundreds of dragon fruit plantations. A brief stop by one of the plantations will help us learn about these exotic fruits and their cultivation. Will you know how to distinguish the color of the fruit inside? After the stop we will hop on the bus again to reach the actual delta after about 2 hours of driving. Our main destination will be tiny island of Tan Thanh located inside the river arms of Mekong.
To reach the island we will need to go over hundreds of bridges in all sizes. In the end a small ferry will take us across the final stretch of the river to reach the Tan Thanh Island – an island that was largely untouched by rapid development and with very few tourists visiting it so far. Once on the island we will hop on the back of the motorbikes driven by a friendly local. Understanding living conditions in Mekong Delta cannot happen without meeting our friendly hosts who are truly proud of their villages and way of living. We will be visiting coconut manufactory to learn about processing of this fruit and will later swap motorbikes for bicycles. This will allow us to slowly cruise down the paths between the paddies and coconut palms. before we visit local villagers, who will be proud to tell you about their lifestyle.
The hosts will be taking you in to their homes for lunch. This will be a true feast of Mekong Delta cuisine that will leave you wondering how & where to get such a tasty meal again. After the lunch we will explore waterways of the island from a small rowing boat. The sampan will navigate its way down the river canals, all between enormous water coconut leaves. We will try to spot some of the ripe water coconut fruits to open and taste them. In the late afternoon we will return to the ferry to say goodbye to our local hosts. Drive back to Saigon in about 2.5hours.
